First of all thanks for having me here.I think i was less nervous before my debut than iam handing this over.Brendon all the best and good luck,best wishes as coach .Benjamin ,boy wonder,from 16  year old when i first saw you to turn into this great man to walk out as captain of your country ,good luck.


I suppose,I nearly got given mine at this venue off Nasser Hussain in 2000 at 9.20 am selectors told me i was going to be playing in the game.Then at 9.40 am when i walked out on to the feild.Nasser had changed his mind and picked somebody else.so i had to wait another 18 months for my debut .when my debut came along,naseer hussain again chucked my cap at me and said "well done Durham",shook my hand and walked off so times have changed!This is the best thing you will ever have in sport.


No matter what you do in sport this is the best thing you will ever accomplish because it's all the hard wark as an 10,11,12 years old standing on the side of the pitch watching your Dad play,waiting for christmas when santa comes down the chimney with a new bat new gloves and everything that goes with it because yiu wanted to play for England .You've archieved it.The hard work starts now.A good lad,nothern lad,hard working.what i will say to the rest of you is ,that number on the back.when you look at it,that's always been a special number  for me that was the most important number in my life because it was a unique number and every time i put it on.I looked at that number and knew i was in the best  1-11 in the country .And i wanted to enjoy it. I didn't want that cap to overawe me.i didn't want that cap to put pressure on me.I wanted that cap and that number to inspire me to play the best i possibly could .



So Matthew ,enjoy what's going to come in the next five days,enjoy wearing this with pride but the biggest advice i can give is to just enjoy wearing this
